Here's the letter:
Dear Home Secretary Sajid Javid,
It is nearly a year since you announced that you would consider ending indefinite immigration detention in the UK. The time has come for you to act.
In the year since you made that promise:
- Approximately 25,000 people have been held in indefinite immigration detention, including vulnerable torture and human trafficking survivors, LGBTQI+ asylum seekers and long-term British residents.
- Three highly critical official reports have called for a time limit.
- Research showed that a time limit could save £35 million.
- More than 80 MPs, including your Conservative colleagues, have signed the Cross-Party Time Limit on Immigration Detention Amendment.
We urge you to immediately put an end to indefinite detention in this country by implementing a 28-day time limit for all and accompanying legal safeguards.
