EMERGENCY PETITION: Protect people in immigration detention from COVID-19
UPDATE, 25 MARCH – After launching our campaign and legal action, we've pressured the Government into 350 releases, system-wide case reviews and and a bar on many new detentions.
The pressure we’re putting on the government is working, but hundreds are still in detention and they need us now more than ever. Keep signing, keep sharing, keep fighting.
To Boris Johnson & Priti Patel,
You must immediately take steps to review and release all those held in UK immigration detention centres to prevent serious harm and loss of life.
COVID-19 poses a grave threat to life in immigration detention centres, where hundreds are warehoused in unsanitary conditions and many have serious health conditions.
Immigration detention exists for administrative reasons ONLY. There is no reason all those held cannot be released.
There is no justification for holding anyone in immigration detention now that travel restrictions prevent removals from the UK.
Why it’s important
Hundreds held in UK immigration detention centres are deprived of their liberty indefinitely without proper access to healthcare.
Detention centres create fertile conditions for the spread of Coronavirus. The situation could quickly reach a crisis point if the government does not immediately release people.
